Lee Man Fong was a painter born in China. In 1932, he moved to Jakarta, Indonesia. He is associated with the Nanyang style, blending Chinese techniques with Western styles. He drew cartoons for newspapers and established his name in advertising but in 1941 decided to focus on painting full time. In 1936 already he had exhibited his work at an exhibition by the Dutch Indies Art Association. During the Japanese Occupation of the Dutch East Indies, he befriended Sukarno, who would later become Indonesia’s President. Fong painted commissioned portraits in the Netherlands and between 1946 and 1952 held solo exhibitions in Amsterdam and The Hague. He then returned to Indonesia and in 1961 became the art consultant and curator of President Sukarno.
