Theodore Mesnard (1814, Cherbourg, Normandy, France - 1844, Tahiti), full name Theodore-Romuald-Georges Mesnard, was a French draughtsman and artist. He participated in an expedition around the Pacific Region under Admiral Du Petit-Thouars, who was a commander of the frigate Venus. Mesnard, a Naval Officer, was the artist on board of the Venus. The French expedition visited among others Sydney for two weeks in November 1838. The voyage caused a stir in British circles around the world, as it was rumoured that it intended to claim New Zealand as a colony. Mesnard made pictures of this voyage around the Pacific from 1836 to 1839, e.g. a view of Sydney.
