Uber den Künstler

Christoph Cellarius (also known as Christophorus Cellarius), (Smalkald, 22 november 1638 - Halle, 4 juni 1707) was a German classical scholar. His non-Latinized name was Christoph Martin Keller. In 1694 Cellarius was appointed professor of Rhetoric and History at the Friedrich University in Halle. He became the head of the first German Faculty of Philology in 1697. In 1702 he wrote his important book Historia Universalis, in which the entire history of Europe was classified in three periods for the first time: ancient history, medieval history and modern history. In former days the history was divided according to Augustinus’s six international timezones or the four ancient empires Babylon, Persia, Greece and Rome. The library of the University of Applied Sciences in Schmalkalden bears his name, it is called the "Cellarius Bibliothek", in honor of Cellarius
